Poker is a card game played between people. It involves betting and can involve bluffing. It requires a lot of skill. This article is meant to be a very basic primer into the rules of poker, for more information you should read a book on it or start playing with a group of people who know how to play.
A player starts a hand by placing a mandatory bet into the pot. These bets are called blinds and they must be placed before the dealer deals anyone any cards. Once the players have all put in their blinds the dealer will deal everyone two cards. Then the players can decide to either call (put out chips equal to the bet) raise the current bet or fold their cards.
If a player doesn’t think their hand is the highest they can raise their bet to make everyone else pay more to stay in the hand. If they raise their bet enough and the other players drop out, then the player who has the highest ranked hand wins the pot and all of the bets made during that round.
If a player has a high-ranked hand they can continue to raise their bets until the other players drop out or they run out of money. Then they will reveal their hands and the player who has the highest-ranked hand wins the pot and all of the money bet during that round.
